The Ultimate Day Trip: Exploring Washington, D.C. with McIlwain Charters

There is something uniquely relaxing about watching the Pennsylvania countryside roll by from the panoramic window of a luxury motorcoach. If you’re looking for a stress-free way to visit our nation’s capital, hopping on a McIlwain Charters bus from Johnstown is hard to beat.

Whether you're heading down for the iconic Cherry Blossom Festival in the spring or a summer trip to the Smithsonian, here is what you can expect from a typical day trip to D.C.

The Journey: From Johnstown to the Capital

Most McIlwain trips to D.C. kick off early—usually around 6:00 AM at the Home Depot on Galleria Drive or their Lodestar location. The beauty of the charter experience is that once you’ve stowed your bag and found your seat, your work is done.

  • Amenities: The modern fleet is equipped with USB charging ports and 110-volt outlets, so you can keep your phone charged for all those monument selfies.

  • The "Bob Evans" Tradition: A staple of the McIlwain itinerary is the breakfast stop at Bob Evans on the way down. It’s a great chance to fuel up on pancakes and coffee before hitting the city.

  • Arrival: You’ll typically pull into D.C. around 11:00 AM, refreshed and ready to explore, rather than exhausted from three-plus hours of white-knuckle driving on I-270.

Choosing Your Adventure

McIlwain usually offers two primary drop-off points, giving you the flexibility to customize your afternoon.

1. The Smithsonian Museums & National Mall

For the history buffs and art lovers, being dropped off at the Washington Monument or near the Smithsonian Castle puts you within walking distance of the world’s best museums.

  • Top Picks: The National Air and Space Museum, the Museum of Natural History, and the National Gallery of Art.

  • Pro Tip: Remember that admission to most Smithsonian museums is free, but some (like the National Museum of African American History and Culture) require timed-entry passes booked in advance.

2. Seasonal Highlights: The Cherry Blossoms

If you’re lucky enough to catch an April trip during the National Cherry Blossom Festival like we did, you can opt for a drop-off at the Lincoln Memorial. Walking through the pink and white blossoms with the Jefferson Memorial in the background is a bucket-list experience.

Making the Most of Your Day

Since you’ll have roughly six hours in the city before the bus departs at 5:00 PM, efficiency is key:

  • Wear Comfortable Shoes: D.C. is a walking city. Even with the bus dropping you off at the heart of the action, you’ll easily clock 10,000 steps. We clocked just about 17,500 steps!

  • Pack Smart: Bring a small backpack with water and snacks. While there are food trucks and museum cafes, they can be pricey and crowded. We remembered our backpacks but forgot our water and regretted it almost immediately. It was hot!

  • The Return Trip: The group stopped at Golden Corral in Frederick, MD, for dinner on the way home. It’s the perfect time to scroll through your photos and share highlights with your fellow travelers.

Why Go by Bus?

Aside from avoiding the nightmare of D.C. traffic and the $40+ parking fees, there’s a sense of community on these trips. You’re traveling with neighbors from the Laurel Highlands, and there’s a professional driver at the helm who knows exactly where to go. Shout out to Randy from McIlwain for an awesome trip!

By the time you pull back into Johnstown around 10:30 PM, you’ve seen the world-class sights of the capital and still have time to sleep in your own bed.

Planning Tip: D.C. trips fill up fast, especially for the Cherry Blossoms. Keep an eye on the McIlwain Charters calendar to grab your tickets early!
